Philosophers Robert Rowland Smith and Mark Vernon discuss the development of ‘Self-help’ looking back at the connection between Self-help and ancient philosophy. They consider the influence of psychoanalysis and the ideas of Freud on the development of the concept, and question the pursuit of happiness.

Robert Rowland Smith is an author and management consultant and writes on the subject of philosophy and psychoanalysis. His recent books include:’Breakfast with Socrates’ and ‘Driving with Plato’.
Mark Vernon is a journalist, philosopher and his recent books include ‘Plato’s Podcasts’, ‘The Meaning of Friendship’ and ‘The Good Life’.
